A Diet for Lowering Cholesterol


People know that high cholesterol is a bad thing, but most are generally undereducated about exactly what cholesterol is and how it can effect your health. With a little bit of effort, knowledge and planning, you can have a diet for lowering cholesterol (and that could very well save your life.)

Cholesterol is a substance found primarily in foods that are high in fat. Therefore, the first step to a diet for lowering cholesterol is to just lower the amount of fat you eat. Eating fewer fried foods and fast foods is usually a great start to lowering how much fat your body consumes. You should also be watchful with red meat, such as hamburgers or steaks, and many dairy products, such as ice cream, whole milk and butter. You should limit these products if you want to get serious about lowering your cholesterol.

Not all cholesterol is bad cholesterol. There are some types of good cholesterols that when you eat them they will help remove the cholesterol that is in your blood stream. These good cholesterols should be a part of everyone's diet. This kind of good cholesterol can be found in nuts and legumes. Legumes are foods such as all sorts of beans, green peas and peanuts.

And your plan for lowering cholesterol should consist mainly of foods without cholesterol in them. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables are a good choice no matter who you are, but if you want to lower your cholesterol, these fruits and vegetables are essential. And your new diet should be accompanied by an increase in the amount you exercise you partake in.

High cholesterol is not something you must live with. You can lower your own levels. High cholesterol can lead to diseases such as stroke and heart attack. Finding a good sensible diet for lowering your cholesterol can help you have a longer, healthier and happier life.
